Mondongo — the name comes from a popular Latin American stew made with tripe — was formed in 1999 by Agustina Picasso, Manuel Mendanha and Juliana Laffitte, who were trained as traditional painters at art school in Buenos Aires. (Mendanha and Laffitte are now married and have a child.) Since they teamed up, no one in the group has gone back to painting, nor has any one of them worked alone. Instead, they create computer templates together, using photographs and downloaded images, which they manipulate and assemble to form quirky tableaus. The resulting blueprints are then brought to life with meticulously applied layers of plasticine, thread, mirrors, garbage bags." Tour de Farce; A subversive art collective takes on the material world, by Armand Limnander, NYT article 2008.
